Although the Breeders’ Cup is nipping at its heels, without a doubt the Kentucky Derby is the biggest horse race of the year in the United States. This is a race that attracts many fans from the general public that typically don’t follow horse racing. A thorough understanding of horse racing, and which horses will win and why is a complex discipline that requires extensive specialized knowledge.

Despite the complexity of understanding horse racing, there are a few basic rules that can help the novice watch the Kentucky Derby with a greater degree of enjoyment. Until recently, the Derby was a race dominated by the favorite. In the 1970’s great horses like Secretariat and Seattle Slew blew away the field but since Spectacular Bid’s winning run in 1979 there have been only a couple of favorites to win the big race. While a serious horse player might not want to categorically dismiss the popular favorite, for the horse racing novice this is a helpful way to narrow down the field.

In all fairness, it should be noted that the favorite has been a historically strong proposition. In the 135 Kentucky Derby races the post time favorite has placed in the money at a 69% clip over the history of the race. So why have the favorites been on such a money losing run in the past two decades? My personal theory is that it is a function of the growing hype surrounding the race”in other words, you get a lot of amateur horse racing fans that distort the notion of the favorite being the most likely to win the race. The most hyped horse becomes the favorite, but this is not always the best horse. In any case, though it could be argued that the anti-favorite bias could be due for a turnaround, for the purpose of understanding this particular race Im going to forget about the post time favorite.

Another important component of Kentucky derby success is the post position of the horses. The innermost positions (1 through 5) have produced over 40% of all Derby winners, while the outer post positions (11 through 20) have had only 13% winners. Note that in some years there might not be that many horses in the race, which would help partially explain the poor performance of the outer start positions. Still, for the purposes of understanding a single race eliminating all of the less favorable start positions is a good idea.

A couple more factors to consider are the horse’s gender and breeding lineage. A couple of simple rules can be applied here–first of all, forget all horses that aren’t intact males (geldings and fillies). Over 90% of all Derby winners have been intact males. Then, eliminate any horse that wasn’t born in the state of Kentucky. This stipulation is starting to change, but for the time being is a good rule to apply for the novice. Over 80% of all Derby winners have been born in Kentucky.

Also, take a look at dosage index numbers. For the novice, there’s no real reason to worry about what they mean or how they’re figured but the general rule of thumb is to look for a horse with a dosage index of 4.00 or less. Since 1984, over half of all Derby winners have fit this criteria.

Here are five tips for cutting the best severance deal for you, despite the recession: 1. the most important thing for employees at all levels to understand is all severance packages are not created equal. Even if your company has a policy that says every employee at a certain level, with certain tenure, receives X weeks or X months of salary as severance, decisions ultimately are made on an individual basis. You can always negotiate a better deal.

2. Know your leverage. 3. Know exactly what you’re going to say. Even if you’re a seasoned negotiator, you should prepare for your severance discussion like you would a big job interview. For example, if you say, “I think this could be age discrimination,” the negotiations will immediately be over. But if you say, “Are you getting rid of me because you think I’m over the hill?” it raises the same issue, but in a way that isn’t an accusation. It can even induce sympathy from your boss. Severance is the toughest kind of negotiation – because it’s not just business, it’s personal.

4. If you are interested in going back to school, you might ask the employer to convert part of your cash payment to a tuition benefit, which will reduce the amount of taxes you have to pay on your severance check. Be creative and look at whether you’d be better off converting some of your non-cash severance benefits to cash, or vice versa. Many employers offer outplacement services. If you are planning to start your own business or already have a new job lined up, you might ask your employer to convert this benefit to cash.

5. 401(k) vesting is negotiable. I have a friend who was three months away from his 401(k) vesting when he was laid off. In his severance negotiations, he asked if he could be kept officially on the payroll until his vesting date. The employer agreed – resulting in an additional $20,000 in his 401(k) account that would have gone away if he hadn’t asked. Chances are, the timing of 401(k) vesting is the last thing on your employer’s mind when they lay you off. But employees have successfully argued in lawsuits that they were fired so their employer wouldn’t have to vest them. You can use this fact as leverage in your severance discussions.

In case you feel that these long hours of regular office are too much to handle, then something waiting for you is ‘temping’. The legal industry has increasingly turned to temporary staffing as a means to keep a lid on cost. Industry analyst estimate this figure that legal temporary staffing, whether for lawyers , paralegals, or clerks, represents a $300 to $500 million market, with growth rates of over 25 percent annually.

The increase in the temp numbers has been accompanied by an increase in the reputation for temporary lawyers. Jeff Silber, an analyst at institutional research group Gerard, Klauer, Mattison, & Co., recently told The National Law Journal: “Temp lawyers used to have a stigma, but the legal staffing business is really starting to move upscale.” For job seekers, the increasing availability and prestige of legal temping jobs means a better lifestyle, higher compensation, and the chance to crack some of the country’s most exclusive firms.

The legal temp field breaks down into two categories these are: traditional temps and “wholesale lawyers.” This latter term was given by David A. While the recession may have ended officially this is likely to be a jobless recovery. In a jobless recovery profit always increases but companies are very much conservative and don’t hire back jobs that were cut down during the recession. Technology has allowed also for fewer workers because productivity increased.

Executives have no options because mostly all job categories have been hit in this recession. If you are one of those executive or manager who has lost their jobs or even if you are still hanging by your fingernails – then there are some things worth considering as you contemplate your next career move during a jobless recovery.

Stop being stubborn. Because you may not be able to get a job at the companies that meet your career goals and it may be time to start expanding your job search. Look into similar industries, different locations and even the idea of switching career is a better option.

On the other hand, prioritize your preferences and act accordingly for the likely companies, and stay on their radar. Things always change, jobs open – be in a better position to get the job. Relocation could be one of the options. For years, job seekers have been privileged enough to find jobs in their own backyard, but that idea has to be changed. Looking elsewhere for jobs that meet your career skill and goals is a better option. At worst you can come back home when the employment situations improves. At best, you may enjoy your new job enough to stay.

It is better if you want to start looking for jobs in healthcare, education, government and the environment. Because taking these route will keep you busy during a recession, but it will also help job seekers add skills to their resumes, make contacts in the industry, and offer opportunities for full-time work should openings become available.

Facing The Job Loss Challenge

If we see the questions on the Interviewing message board we can see that it shown some of our readers’ difficulties in getting a search after leaving or losing a job. But according to me it is useful for us to start at the beginning.

One thing is very clear about the work culture of the new millennium is that nearly all work is now short term, frequently even careers themselves. You have to prepare for change whether it suits your style or not. If we mention the current statistics so we can see that almost all say that the average job is only about three to four years now, but if we talk about 15 years ago when the average tenure of the job was 10 years.

It will be better if you understand that there will be an emotional roller coaster, most severely during the first few days. This ride will include lots of depression, apathy, denial, anger and then some more anger. One degree or another degree everyone goes through this stage. And I just don’t understand that why people don’t believe in this thing.

It is not good to call everyone you know and start sending out resumes, answering ads, and calling recruiters. Because most of the times you are not prepared for the start a search after a separation. Don’t do a job search “on the rebound”. You’ll probably say things that you will wish you hadn’t. But it is good to share your true feelings about the situation with only a few people- maybe your close friends or your family members. You don’t want everyone to avoid you (”Uh oh, here comes the whiner…”). Now is the time to adopt the marketing stance that your career – no matter how you perceive the reality – has been sunshine, light, and success. And you want everyone to know about those successes.

Calling to everyone you know is NOT networking. Networking is a indirect relationship building, quite a different thing.

It is good to develop a target, in my private practice, I have seen people who says that they want to be on TV,” I never knew what that meant… did it mean television repair? Developing a target is the centerpiece of beginning of your search. It is good to know hat what is job function – specifically? What is the desired culture? Geographic location? Size of organization? Do you want to start your own business? Consult? Do you have Dot-com-Virus? This may all involve some extensive self-assessment, with or without outside assistance – but it’s necessary.

And then, of course, you need to research your target

Stick to your marketing plan. It is good to work on the system; there are no shortcuts, except for the occasional bolt of lightning. Discipline and consistency account for a lot in this process.

It is good to be flexible. If you’re really listening while developing those relationships, your target might shift and adjust.

If you are creating daily structures and devise techniques for stress improvement then it is good because its not a terrible thing to do something that you enjoy during this period, something that you couldn’t do while working full time.

Losing or leaving your job doesn’t mean that you are carrying the stigma it used to, except in your own mind. Its part of the culture now. And everyone has to admit this thing that everyone has to go through this process one day.

Over the years I have had many opportunities to join portfolio sites for many different reasons. I joined some simply to get a back link to my site, which increased my Google ranking. I joined others to give me some exposure or some sort and I joined others simply to network and show some love. Well PNW is one site that offers all of these features plus more, I will be reviewing other sites soon also.

I think PNW (Premium Network Worldwide) was the most affordable creative site of its kind. It has clearly miles cheaper than creativeshake.com and theispot.com, one of which I have joined to my detriment.

PNW is very unique because it is very easy to upload images and manage your portfolio, with a simple drag & drop type feature to help you to put things in a specific order. They are also taking the limit off the number of portfolios you can add to your profile, so you will be able to add work continually which is great.

One of the most astonishing things about pnworldwide.net is the fact that along with all the usual important portfolio features, they even offer an email marketing service and an article writing service on your behalf!!!! So what I am saying is they actually take the time to send out email shots to there large client base and hand write professionally written articles about there subscribed artists. The articles are then posted to hundreds of article sites all over the internet and carefully rearranged so the content is unique and fresh for Google. I checked this out my self by typing in ‘Andre Junget’ and to my surprise, 9 article variations showed up on page 1 under that search term, with a link to his profile, which means he will get a lot more exposure over time with this sort of promotion.

I paid something like 325 for another well known portfolio site and all I got was a portfolio with 20 images and a biography!!!!. I think I have definitely learnt from my errors.

Of course you get the usual video uploads etc, but if your looking for an extra income you can sell your art from your profile page. Or if your are a Twitter fan you can link your activity to your profile for people to be updated. RSS feeds can also be displayed.

You can add blogs to your profiles to keep people up to speed with your activity or you can sell digital images as downloads.

In this approach, there is much interaction with the photographer on the day of the wedding. In the photojournalistic approach, the images recorded are much more subtle with less photographer interaction. These two approaches are the two extremes of photographic styles. Today most photographers will side with one of the two styles.

There are certain things to keep in mind while hiring a photographer to cover your wedding. Every photographer possesses an individual style. It takes some research from your side to decide who you want to photograph your wedding. It is recommended to start looking for the right photographer well ahead of time.
